It should come as no surprise that IT security is a serious and growing consideration for businesses and IT managers everywhere. The increasingly interconnected nature of networks, devices, and machines (i.e. ‘things’) means the gateways for an attack are growing and the need to manage vulnerabilities are growing as well.

IT research firm Gartner recently released a list (and discussion) of the top ten technologies for information security. While much of the information focuses on broad, industry-wide considerations and trends, it does highlight the seriousness of the issues facing every business – large and small.

This Information Age article (click here) presents the Gartner list, and the discussion hints at the sophistication of the efforts being made to isolate and contain malware and other malicious attacks. It is noteworthy that the focus is not solely on blocking the entry of malware into an IT environment. The realistic assessment now includes the prospect that something can get through a network’s defenses. Given the opportunistic nature of malware these days, it is important to block, isolate, and contain.
